Thankful...

“We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you in our prayers. We remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ.” -1 Thessalonians 1: 2-3 NIV

We continue to travel and visit with family, friends and partners, and we were so encouraged by our time in Alabama and Georgia. Seeing family members as well as friends, including people we served with in PNG, has been a genuine blessing. We do not take these opportunities for granted, as we often only see our loved ones for a few days once every 3 to 4 years, so the time is very precious. We try to focus on the eternal perspective, knowing we will spend forever with our brothers and sisters in Christ as we worship Jesus, and this gives us peace each time we say ‘goodbye for now’ to those we love. This season of thankfulness is a mindset we try to embrace year round, as we are always thankful to each of our partners who make our Wycliffe ministry in Papua New Guinea possible. Thank you to those of you who responded to our increase in ministry budget; we now need to raise only $350 a month. If you are not currently a financial partner with our Wycliffe ministry and would like to be, please contact us using the link below or email.

Please continue to let us know how we can be praying for you, and we pray you will have a mindset of gratitude and thankfulness during this season of Thanksgiving, and appreciate the time you have with your loved ones. We are always thankful for each of you and you are in our hearts and our prayers always!

Going to space?

We indulged our inner astronauts as we enjoyed a lovely gift from good friends, a day at the Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. It was a wonderful experience, and a timely one, as Kathy is brushing up on her space science in preparation to teach an elective class in Astronomy during Semester 2 at UIS when we return to Ukarumpa. Educational opportunities like these are part of the way we learn and keep retooling while we are on home assignment. Kathy needs to be as prepared as possible to share these experiences with students in PNG, as she plans to go back to school the day after our return to PNG in January!

Prayer Points...

 • Papua New Guinea (PNG): Pray for a true sense of gratitude and thankfulness in government leadership and PNG churches.

• Bible translation: Praise for the success of the Oral Bible Storying workshop in Ubuo among the Kope people of Gulf Province.

• Our roles in PNG: Pray for the teachers and students at UIS as they finish Semester 1 well. Pray for God’s wisdom and protection for the security team in Ukarumpa.

• PNG missionaries: Pray for the safety and security of all of the missionaries as they travel via road and air throughout PNG.

• God’s provision: Thank you for your faithful prayers and partnership; we are getting closer to our ministry budget required to return to PNG. If you would like to partner with our Wycliffe ministry, please see the link below or contact us for more information.

Our Lighthouse...

“In Him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” -John 1:4-5 NIV

As followers of Christ, we are called to pour out our lives for the gospel, to be light and salt to those around us. Our time in the USA may look a bit different, but it is just as much of a ministry and mission field as our time in Papua New Guinea. Since arriving back in the USA in June, we have been blessed to see family and friends, speak at churches and small groups, and share about the great things that God is doing in Papua New Guinea and in our own lives. Along the way, we have been deeply encouraged and blessed by many of you as well. Thus far, we have traveled throughout New England, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia and North Carolina. Our next stops include Alabama, Georgia and Florida, before we head back to Pennsylvania and then, Lord willing, to Papua New Guinea after Christmas. We have finished getting our updated immunizations and necessary paperwork to return to the field, but increases in our ministry budget due to the increased cost of health insurance and inflation mean that we still need to raise another $500 a month. If you are not currently financially partnering with our Wycliffe ministry and would like to, please contact us or use the link (right column of this blog). Jesus is our lighthouse, shining in the darkness, and it is a privilege to reflect His light to those around us. May His light and truth bring you peace and comfort in a troubling and often chaotic world, and may He use you to be His light to those in darkness around you. Please let us know how we can be praying for you!

Gone fishin'

Part of our assignment while we are in the USA is taking time for relaxation. Scott had an opportunity to go fishing with a friend while we were visiting in Beaufort, NC while Kathy spent time viewing the Cape Lookout Lighthouse. These opportunities are also precious and part of our strategy to fully equip, refresh and retool ourselves during home assignment. Thank you for praying for us as we continue to prepare ourselves to return to PNG for our fourth term of service, and for the wonderful hospitality that we have received as we have visited with many of you during our travels we appreciate each of you so much!

Prayer points...

 • Papua New Guinea (PNG): Pray for wisdom and integrity for all of the leaders in government.

• Bible translation: Praise for the faithfulness of translation teams like Konni and Tommy Logan, who dedicated the Kasua New Testament in 2017 and are still at work remotely to help translate the Old Testament.

• Our roles in PNG: Pray for the teachers and students at UIS who have begun Term 2. Pray for God’s wisdom and protection for the security team in Ukarumpa.

• PNG missionaries: Pray for the new missionary families as they go to live in villages for four weeks as part of their PNG Orientation training course.

• God’s provision: Thank you for your faithful prayers and partnership. If you would like to partner with our Wycliffe ministry, please see the link below or contact us for more information.

Grateful for our summer in New England…

“One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him. “Lord, teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples.” Luke 11:1-2 NIV

It has been such a blessing to be in New England this summer, sharing with churches and individuals about everything God is doing in Papua New Guinea through Bible translation and our support ministries. It has been equally refreshing for us to hear about what is going on in your lives, as we have visited with so many of you. We do not take for granted those opportunities to spend time with people, to hear about how God is working in their lives, and to be able to pray for each one with intentionality and insight. Jesus spent time in relationship with people, and time alone interceding on their behalf to His Father. Much like the sunflowers we have enjoyed here in Dover, we want to keep our faces turned toward the Son and follow Jesus’ example. Please continue to let us know how we can be praying for you. It is always with sadness that we say goodbye to our dear friends and family here in New England but we are so grateful for the time we have had with you all and you will be in our hearts and in our prayers. We look forward to traveling south in October to visit the rest of our family and friends whom we have not yet seen, even as we begin our preparations to return to PNG. Thank you for your prayers for our safe travels and for God’s provision for medical checks and financial partners. We trust in His timing and plan to return to PNG in time for the new school semester in January

A sweet retreat…

Making time for spiritual renewal needs to be a priority, as the busyness of each day will squeeze out our time with God if we let it. Kathy loved the Sweet Selah retreat on Lake Winnipesaukee in NH and spent time with God, with friends and with His Word while Scott was in Kansas at a training workshop. These opportunities are precious, and part of our home assignment strategy to fully equip, refresh and retool ourselves. We desire to continue to be obedient to the work He has called us to be a part of and want to serve well. Thank you for praying for us as we continue to prepare ourselves to return to PNG for our fourth term of service.

Prayer Points...

Papua New Guinea (PNG): Praise for the safe visit of the Prime Minister to the Aiyura Valley, and the opportunity for the UIS student orchestra to play the PNG national anthem for him.

• Bible translation: Praise for the faithfulness of translation teams like the Whiteheads, who are celebrating 50 years of service in PNG with the Menya people.

• Our roles in PNG: Pray for the teachers and students at UIS who are already finishing Term 1. Pray for God’s blessing of His protection of the security team in Ukarumpa.

• PNG missionaries: Pray for the interns from Australia who are in Ukarumpa on a Discovery trip to seek His will for their lives.

• God’s provision: Thank you for your faithful prayers and partnership. If you would like topartner with our Wycliffe ministry, please see the link below or  contact us for more information.

Global missions includes local missions, wherever “local” may be…

“And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All power has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and, lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.”  -Matthew 28:18-20 NKJV

We have been blessed to speak at several churches in New England this summer, and want to thank those of you who have come out to hear us share about our ministries in PNG. One theme we have reiterated frequently is the call for all Christians to be missionaries in their spheres of influence. When most people think of missionaries, they think of overseas Christian workers who translate the Bible, plant churches, feed the hungry, educate children and treat illness. While accurate, this is an incomplete idea of missions. Those of us who go overseas to promote the cause of the Gospel are indeed missionaries, but the reality is ALL Christians are called to be missionaries in the communities in which God has placed them. The Great Commission (above) is one of many scriptures where God tells us to go into the world and make disciples. Some other references include: Genesis 12:1-3, Psalm 67, Psalm 96, Matthew 16:14-18, Luke 24: 44-49, John 20: 19-23 and Acts 1: 4-8. This list is not exhaustive, but it does illustrate a point: these “commissions” are not just for pastors and overseas workers. Missions is not an optional exercise of the Christian church; it is the core work of the church wherever the church exists.

We support the work of Bible translation through education and risk management, but we also serve as missionaries here when we encourage other believers and point those who don’t yet know and trust Jesus to Him. As a believer, this is true of you as well. When you pray for others, tithe, serve in your church, talk to people about God’s Word, show compassion, mentor young people and support local and global ministries, you also serve as missionaries. We want to thank you all for your prayers and financial partnership with our ministry. We’d also like to know how we can be praying for you, so please send us an email and let us know your prayer needs.

The blessing of seeing family…

One of most challenging aspects of living overseas is the infrequent visits we have with our families, who we have not seen since 2019. It was a special blessing to get to see Kathy’s mom in July for a week, which was sooner than expected. Every visit is a gift and one we do not take for granted. None of us know how long we will be alive or how many opportunities we will have to spend time with those we love. May we love our families well (both bloodrelated and our brothers and sisters in Christ) and may we share God’s love and the joy of knowing Jesus with everyone He places in our spheres of influence.

Prayer Points:

• Papua New Guinea (PNG): Praise for recent peace treaties signed between villages in the Aiyura valley.

• Bible translation: Praise for the positive responses among the Arop-Lokep people to the Culture Meets Scripture workshop held on Long Island.

• Our roles in PNG: Pray for the teachers and students at UIS who are already half way through Term 1. Pray for the security team in Ukarumpa.

• PNG missionaries: Pray for wisdom and strength for the 6 new families starting their PNG Orientation Course.

• God’s provision: We are so very thankful for your faithful partnership, and for the blessing of getting to see so many of you already while we’ve been in the northeast. We will begin to travel south starting in October; please contact us if you would like a visit!

Home assignment travels...

“We always thank God for all of you and continually mention you in our prayers.”

1 Thessalonians 1:2 NIV

Now that we are back in the USA for our 6 month home assignment, it has been such a blessing to meet with family, friends and partners in the New England area this month. We will be visiting with people in the northeast until the end of September and then plan to travel south to see as many of you as we can before our planned return to Papua New Guinea on December 28th. We would love to connect with you and would encourage you to reach out to us via our emails (see bottom) so that we can schedule a visit, if you are available. Your faithful prayers and partnership have sustained us through this last three year term and we have seen God working in amazing ways, as more language communities have received the Bible in their heart languages and been transformed through the Good News of salvation through Jesus Christ. You are an integral part of our ministries in Ukarumpa because you enable us to continue to serve obediently and we appreciate you so much.  Thank you for blessing us so we can bless others!

Camp missionaries ...

We were grateful for the opportunity to teach over 100 middle school kids about missions at Camp Good News in Maine.  It was a rewarding experience, with the highlight being us meeting two Papua New Guinean sisters, who will be traveling to PNG for the first time with their family this summer. They soaked in our videos showing the beauty of PNG, and asked lots of questions around the campfire. God is the great orchestrator, and His timing is always perfect; we were just thankful for the chance to be there at just the right time to share about our love of PNG with those girls.

Prayer Points

 • Papua New Guinea (PNG): Pray for peaceful resolution to conflicts in the Enga language group.

 • Bible translation: Pray for the planning for the Enga New Testament dedication.

 • Our roles in PNG: Pray for the new school year and all the teachers who have recently returned to PNG.

 • PNG missionaries: Pray for wisdom and discernment for missionaries working in areas with ongoing conflicts.

 • God’s provision: We are so thankful for God’s grace and mercy in bringing us safely back to the USA. Thank you for your faithful partnership with our Wycliffe ministry and we hope to see you while we are on home assignment!

Wrapping up a field term...

“To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy - to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority, through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore! Amen.” - Jude 1:24-25 (NIV)

On September 16th, 2020, we were among the first group of people to return to our mission in Papua New Guinea during the pandemic. Travel had been difficult, but after 6 failed attempts, and with lots of prayer, we finally made it back to Ukarumpa. Each of our field terms has been filled with unique challenges and this one was no exception. The pandemic, staffing shortages, medevacs, criminal activity, warfare among local villages, an election cycle, civil unrest in various parts of the country and a 7.6M earthquake made this term even more interesting than most. We’ll be honest: we are tired. Yet, throughout all of this, God has blessed, strengthened and encouraged us in a variety of ways, including being able to host our first visitors from the USA last July. We are now winding down this term and preparing to return to NH for a Home Assignment from late June through December. Our goal is to spend the first three months in New England before heading south to Florida to see family and friends down the East Coast. We are so thankful for all of your prayers and partnership and we look forward to seeing you while we are back in the States. Thank God with us for all He has done!

Banquet...

Our students are currently preparing for semester exams, but a couple of weeks ago, they got to enjoy Banquet. This is a prom-style event hosted by the community to honor the juniors and seniors. The theme was “Deep into the Woods”, which included an indoor zip line and live animal encounters, plus a formal dinner and other fun activities that ran throughout the evening. Kathy was all into helping with the animals, which included a koi pond, snapping turtle, two green tree pythons, a cuscus (a PNG marsupial, similar to a possum), and a bunch of baby bunnies. It was a lovely night to bless our students, and enjoy God’s creation in a unique way. The helpers dressed up as Fish and Wildlife Conservation officers and it was difficult to tell who was having a better time, the community helpers or the students!

Prayer Points:

• Papua New Guinea (PNG): Pray for God to continue to move and bring peace, unity and revival in the Aiyura valley and PNG.

• Bible translation: Praise for the upcoming dedications of the Vitu and Kaluli New Testaments; pray the events go smoothly and God’s Word changes hearts and lives in those language communities.

• Our roles in PNG: Pray for Scott as he wraps up his role as Security Consultant. Pray for Kathy and all of the students at Ukarumpa International School to finish the school year well.

• PNG missionaries: Pray for the families who will be leaving PNG, those who are coming back, and those who are staying; each will experience challenging transitions and lots of goodbyes.

• God’s provision: Thank you for your prayers, and for your faithful partnership with our Wycliffe ministry in PNG. We are so very grateful and we look forward to reconnecting with you while we are in the USA!

“But now Christ is risen from the dead, and has become the first fruits of those who have fallen asleep. For since by man came death, by man also came the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ all shall be made alive.” 1 Corinthians 15:20-22 (NKJV)

Easter in Ukarumpa is a special time. We start the day by attending a sunrise service, where we worship and pray for our community, the surrounding villages, Papua New Guinea and the world at large. Afterwards, we invite some close friends over for breakfast before attending the morning church service. It is a great time to connect with likeminded people and celebrate Jesus Christ’s resurrection from the tomb and His victory over sin and death. In fact, Easter is the core of our faith and, ultimately, the reason for our missionary service here in Papua New Guinea. While it is true that every day we see fresh evidence of a rapidly deteriorating world, we are nonetheless confident in the ultimate outcome of history. This confidence is not a result of our own talents, but of our faith in Jesus Christ. You see, we know that Jesus is exactly who He says He is in the Bible. He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, the Good Shepard that lays down His life for the sheep, the Son of God and the King of Kings who will return again one day in glory to set all things right. Every Resurrection Sunday, we celebrate the fact that He has risen from the dead, is interceding at God’s right hand on our behalf, and will come again- this makes all the difference! Thank you for enabling us to share this Good News with others.

Practicing hospitality...

It is a blessing to have Ukarumpa family to spend holidays like Easter with while we are in PNG. Everyone shares the challenge of being thousands of miles away from their birth families, so it is extra special to have people with whom you can celebrate Jesus’s death and resurrection, worship at church, and, of course, share a home-cooked meal. It is so easy to take family for granted until we are far away, but we are so grateful to have brothers and sisters in Christ right where we are called to serve.

Prayer Points:

• Papua New Guinea (PNG): Pray for wisdom and integrity for those in leadership positions, and for peace in the Aiyura valley.

• Bible translation: Praise for the completed checking of the Meramera New Testament and pray the final edits and printing go smoothly.

• Our roles in PNG: Pray for Scott as he transitions into his role as Security Consultant. Pray for Kathy and all of the students at Ukarumpa International School to have a healthy and productive Term 4 and finish the year well.

• PNG missionaries: Pray for the families of seniors at UIS to finish well and experience God’s peace as they transition back to passport countries with their graduates.

• God’s provision: Thank you for your prayers, and for your faithful partnership with our Wycliffe ministry in PNG. We are very grateful and we could not continue to serve here without you. We look forward to reconnecting with you while we are in the USA!

Building capacity,,,

“Unless the LORD builds the house, the builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.” Psalm 127:1 (NIV)

As we support the work of Bible Translation in Papua New Guinea, one of our tasks is to, with God’s help and guidance, build the capacity of our Papua New Guinean staff. While capacity building has always been an important part of our ministry here, personnel shortages have greatly accelerated the process. The fact is that fewer expatriates are coming to the field and those that do come are staying for shorter periods of time. Since our return to PNG in September of 2020, Scott has hired and trained a new Field Security Officer (FSO) and a new Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO), and he is overseeing organizational changes which have allowed other qualified PNG citizen staff to assume greater levels of responsibility. Scott is now beginning a new role as Security Consultant, where he will support our staff and leadership by providing security advice and training, as well as administrative and project support. Scott will continue to serve on the Crisis Management Team and support the HR department on certain projects as requested. Kathy continues to teach science and serve as the head of department and has recently been involved in a project to make the chemical storage room more earthquake-resistant. Building capacity and continuing to make incremental improvements in each of our departments is just one more way we can honor God with our skills and talents. We are also beginning to prepare to go on a six month Home Assignment in June and we look forward to seeingmany of you while we are back in the States.

Going bananas...

Part of each Term 4 at Ukarumpa International School is a presentation on and discussion about transitions. For Third Culture Kids (TCKs), this involves those who are leaving, those who are arriving, and those who are staying here in Ukarumpa, and all of the emotions and challenges that go along with each type of transition. As much as our students have heard it all before, they are often in a different place in the cycle each time, so the message resonates differently. As teachers, we also need to hear this message, as we experience similar challenges. “Transition brain” often makes us feel like we are going bananas, as we struggle to think and plan ahead for where we are going, while still being fully present where we are. It reminds us that ultimately, Heaven is our home and we are just passing through here, so we can trust God’s presence with us wherever we are. Ironically, the fresh bananas are one of those things we’ll really miss when we aren’t here!

Prayer Points:

• Papua New Guinea (PNG):Pray for wisdom and integrity for those in leadership positions.

• Bible translation: Pray for the upcoming final checking of the Meramera New Testament before it is printed and dedicated.

• Our roles in PNG: Pray for Scott as he completes on-boarding the new CHRO and transitions to his role as Security Consultant. Pray for Kathy and all of the students at Ukarumpa International School to have a healthy and productive Term 4 and finish the year well.

• PNG missionaries: Pray for the new expatriate families in the PNG Orientation Course to stay healthyand be successful while living with local PNG families in the villages.

• God’s provision: Thank you for your prayers, and for your faithful partnership with our Wycliffe ministry in PNG. We are very grateful and we could not continue to serve here without you. We look forward to reconnecting with you while we are in the USA!

Flowers and Fruit...

“I will send down the showers in their season; they shall be showers of blessing”-Ezekiel 34:26

We often get focused on the particulars of our work here in Papua New Guinea. Our goal is to be obedient to God’s call, to serve to the best of our ability, and to support the work of Bible translation here in Papua New Guinea. It is humbling to know there are over 339 languages here in the Pacific, and 1,680 languages world-wide that still have no Bible translation work begun yet. That is approximately 1.5 billion people without God’s Word in their first language. But we are reminded that work is being done in more than 2,800 languages world-wide, and more than 700 languages do have the full Bible (source: Wycliffe Global Alliance, October 2022). The goal of this work is to enable people to encounter the living God through His Word, so that people’s lives, families, and communities can be transformed. Much like when we plant many flowers, we trust and pray for God to bring the fruit. We are always very encouraged to see this happening in many communities, as Papua New Guineans are being trained and discipled to share the Good News about Jesus and His redemptive work on the cross. Now, as we enter the 40 days leading up to Easter, please pray with us for these communities to go deeper in their knowledge and understanding of Jesus Christ, and pray for divine opportunities for those who have not yet heard the Good News. May God bring the fruit, and receive all the glory.

Rainy days do bring wonderful blessings...

Another blessing of the rainy season is the flowers it brings. The vine-like passion fruit growing on ourback fence started out as little shoots in cups that we transplanted last June. They barely hung on through the dry season, but with some nurturing and fertilizing, they survived. Then the rains came, andnow they have taken over the back fence, covering it with a green carpet of vines. Their subdued flowers (pictured, left) don’t attract much attention from people, but do draw an array of butterflies and other pollinators. Once pollinated, they have begun bearing fruit; at first, one ripe passionfruit here or there, but now, an entire sink-full (see picture above). What are you nurturing right now? Praythat the Lord of the harvest will bring it to fruition.

Prayer Points....

 • Papua New Guinea (PNG): Praise for peace and a resolution to the local village conflicts nearby inthe Aiyura valley.

• Bible translation: Pray for the God’s Big Story workshop, as trainees from several different language groups teach what they have learned to the Tami people next month.

• Our roles in PNG: Pray for Scott as he on-boards the new PNG Chief Human Resources Officer, and praise for all of the students at Ukarumpa International School who just finished their successful theater production.

• PNG missionaries: Praise for the translation team families who are able to spend time in their villages, and for the new families in the PNG Orientation Course who will be going to the village soon.

• God’s provision: Thank you for your prayers, and for your faithful financial partnership with ourWycliffe ministry in PNG. We could not continue serving here without you.

Embracing a new year...

“A man’s heart plans his way, but the LORD directs his steps” -Proverbs 16:9 KJV

As 2023 gets off to a busy start, we are reminded that it is God who ultimately determines our path, even as we make plans in faith and use the abilities He has blessed us with to serve those around us. Scott will be spending time in the next few months training and mentoring a new Papua New Guinean Chief Human Resources Officer, who will take over for him as we leave to return to the USA in June on home assignment. Kathy will be finishing the semester with her students and making sure there is continuity for the science department for the next school year, and that all of the curriculum materials are up to date and accessible. In each of these endeavors, we are entrusted by God with the skills and abilities to think critically and plan ahead, but we also trust in Him to guide our plans and provide for our needs. We have seen His hand of provision and protection so abundantly since 2020 when we returned to PNG, and even during the challenges, we have had peace. We look forward, God-willing, to our return to the USA in June for a 6 month home assignment, where we hope to visit with many of you and share more details of how we’ve seen God working here in PNG. One of the blessings we never tire of is seeing so many different species of butterflies, and each one reminds us of God’s ability to transform people into a new creation through the work of His Word in their lives. We praise God for the transformation we have seen here and for the work He will continue to do in the future

God’s promises...

In the midst of the storm, God is with us, and we often forget to look up and recognize His presence. One of the joys of rainy season here in Ukarumpa are rainbows (as well as having plentiful rain water in our tanks to supply our running water in our houses on center!). It is easy to be out walking in the rain, focusing on the slippery mud and trying to stay dry, and miss the beauty in the sky above us if we would just look up. We pray that you experience God’s presence with you in your storm, and that you look up and see the beauty He is working in and through your circumstances, even during the difficult times.

Prayer Points...

 • Papua New Guinea (PNG): Pray for peace and a resolution to the local village conflicts nearby in the Aiyura valley.

• Bible translation: Pray for the dormitory and translator training facility under construction in the Ubuo language area and for continued progress on their New Testament and literacy materials.

• Our roles in PNG: Pray for Scott as he on-boards the new PNG Chief Human Resources Officer, fulfilling localization in that role. Pray for Kathy and all of the students at Ukarumpa International School to have a healthy and productive semester.

• PNG missionaries: Praise for the families who have recently returned to PNG, and for the new families who have arrived and are in the PNG Orientation Course.

• God’s provision: Thank you for your prayers, and for your faithful financial support of our Wycliffe ministry in PNG. We could not continue to serve here without you.
